A Friendship Forged in Hell!

Daniel Leary is a lieutenant in the Republic of Cinnabar Navy with no money and no prospects since he quarreled with his ruthless, politically powerful father.

Adele Mundy is a scholar with no money and no prospects since her family was massacred for conspiring against the Government of Cinnabar.

Kostroma is a wealthy planet which depends on diplomacy to stay independent in a galaxy whose two great powers, Cinnabar and the Alliance, battle for supremacy.

In a few hours, diplomacy is going to fail Kostroma. Daniel, Adele, and the scratch crew they gather aren't much to stand in the way of a powerful invasion fleet, but just possibly they're enough.

Men and women who hold courage cheap and honor more dear than life itself face impossible odds in a novel of color, intrigue and slashing action. From the corridors of a treason-ridden palace through the perils of unknown seas and hellish jungles to a final blazlng climax in space, the heroes never bow and the action never flags.

They have nothing on their side but each other—and heaven help whatever tries to stand in their way!

This was fun!

David Drake brings the good ol' fashioned military SF in the tradition of H. Beam Piper and all them. Drake is far less melodramatic than Weber, mostly because our main heroes are far more flawed, having traits that actually make them less likeable. Both are dyed-in-the-wool aristocrats, opinionated, haughty, and sometimes insufferable. But you do still root for them through all their trials and really want them to win through the dangers put in their way.

Most of the action takes place on a single world, with some tense and exciting ship action at the end. The tech feels a touch spotty, super-advanced in some areas, not quite better than what we have today in others. a few of the seams show; when we're introduced to a fungus pod full of dangerous insects, we know exactly what's going to happen with that later.

Still, a very enjoyable read, and I'm already looking forward to picking up the next in this series.

With the Lightnings Lt Leary Book 1 eBook David Drake Reviews

I’m willing to bet our author is a fan of O’Brien’s Aubrey and Maturin. The similarities are striking but not unpleasant, from the almost disastrous first meeting of our heroes to the unlikely friendship. I’m looking forward to the next story. My only concern is the jumping of POV in a few sections, where we were in multiple minds in a short time. It’s not wrong as much as I prefer the “camera” to sit on one shoulder at a time. And please put me on the list of readers who want more techie details, not less.
An exciting beginning to this series. A bit different than the David Drake books I'm used to but then it is set in a space navy instead of a mercenary tank unit. Still darn fine reading though. I rather suspect that other volumes in the series will have more action simply because so much of this one was taken up with character development. I look forward to reading more in the series. As it is I can recommend this book even if the reader buys it as a stand alone addition to their library. Trust me, it won't be money wasted as there is enough excitement and adventure in this book to thrill any Sci-Fi fan.
Having read this many years ago; I recently bought it to re-read to refresh my memory. It was equally as good the second time as forgotten details came back to light to remind me why I usually find Drake's characters so full blown. I recommend it whole heartedly; especially for anyone who has entered the Lt. Leary series at any later point. Read it to fill out the beginning details if you started the series anywhere else; or read it to begin the series as something new to you.
It drags in a few places, and there are a lot of holes in the society Drake created, but it is still a fun book to read.

Good SF is often mostly about the characters and not the technology, and these characters are pretty good, if a little shallow.

The futuristic individual weapons are for the most part believable, although why anyone would bother with some of them when conventional firearms would work about as well and be a lot cheaper is beyond me.

The climactic space battle was sort of anti-climatic to me. It was hard to follow for me just what was going on and why it actually worked.

In the end it was a fun start to a series I like and have read before. This one is a freebie in the edition. Might as well get it and see if you like it. I think some of the follow on books get better, although it is pretty much more of the same, just better thought out IMO.

There are no great truths to be learned here. Just some light fun.
With the Lightnings
(1998)

This is the first novel in the Leary, Republic of Cinnabar (RCN), series The next book in this series is Lt Leary, Commanding

Lieutenant Daniel Leary is an officer on the Republic of Cinnabar Navy ship Aglaia, with no money other than his small RCN salary which will not be enough to let him live like he is used to and no probable successful future prospects. Adele Mundy, also from Cinnabar, is a librarian or information retrieval specialist, also with no money and no probable successful future prospects. Adel's Father had been killed when he was accused of being an enemy of Cinnabar by Lieutenant Daniel Leary's father, when Daniel was seven years old.

In this book, Lt. Daniel Leary is a supernumerary, kind of a glorified flunky or aide de camp, on a diplomatic mission from Cinnabar to Kostroma, a wealthy trading planet caught between two growing
empires, the Alliance and Cinnabar.
Adele Mundy survived the political massacre of her family by being fortuitously off the planet. Adele is the newly-appointed Electoral Librarian in Kostroma's capitol. Drake writes in his usual casual style, which I enjoy.
Lieutenant Daniel Leary is an interesting guy, a talented astrogator, just like his famous Uncle, he's also an amateur naturalist and a bit of a lady's man. He dreams of command, and is plunged into it to rescue a group of Cinnabar sailors stranded in the coup. He proves to be
competent and infectiously optimistic. He befriends the Librarian, rescues her when
the coup turns ugly, and learns that besides being a computer whiz, she's a a great shot and calm under fire. They become an amazingly effective team.
I find it ironic that the author who has been criticized for too much combat and not enough character development is criticized in some of the above reviews for not enough combat and too much character development! Makes you wonder if some of these reviewers can ever be pleased!

You might as well buy this and read it for your self, so that you can decide for yourself who is right. I compare this series favorably to David Weber's Honor Harrington series which begins with On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington)Station. As far as the combat is concerned Drake has been there and done that. Weber, as far as I know, read about combat (it ain't the same)! Check my profile if you want to know my credential in stating this. I highly recommend this series (see my Listmania,
DAVID DRAKE'S WITH THE LIGHTNINGS (AKA RCN)), to fans of Space Opera, David Weber, and to anyone who just likes a rollicking good read. Quite frankly, I regret waiting this long to read this series!

Gunner December, 2012
I have most of the other Lt. Leary books, and I feel this book does a good job of setting up the rest of them quite nicely. There s some graphic violence, but in war you will have that. I don't feel that it's gratuitous or excessively graphic, but it IS there. The interpersonal relationships between the characters and the military strategies involved made this an enjoyable read. If you've read the Harrington series by Weber (and enjoyed them) then the will also be to your liking.
